Home Care Assistance for Veterans in Pasadena

Home care assistance for veterans is non-medical help with daily life at home, and for many veterans the VA can authorize and pay for it. Right at Home Pasadena is an approved, contracted VA provider through TriWest, so we can deliver VA-authorized care once the VA approves it.

This page explains how the process works, what caregivers can do, what the VA's rules limit, and how to begin.

How veterans get VA-covered home care

The VA decides who qualifies and how much care is authorized. We do not review applications or approve services. The path usually looks like this:

  • Start with the VAA veteran, or their VA medical professional, has to ask for the service. Talk to your VA care team or social worker about an assessment.
  • The VA sets the hoursThe veteran's provider at the local VA medical center determines how many home care visits are authorized. Coverage depends on eligibility, clinical need, local availability and authorization.
  • Ask for us by nameVeterans can request Right at Home as their provider. We are approved and contracted through TriWest, and we can help you with the process.

VA coverage is not unlimited, and we cannot promise approval or a set number of hours.

What veteran home care services include

VA-authorized home care at the veteran's residence can include help with dressing, bathing, personal care, meal preparation, laundry and feeding. Day to day, that means a caregiver who helps with routines so the veteran can stay comfortably at home.

Our personal care services also cover walking and wheelchair assistance, transferring, grooming, oral care and toileting help. The exact tasks are agreed in your care plan.

This is non-medical care. A caregiver can remind someone about medication and go with them to appointments, but clinical treatment needs an appropriate healthcare provider. If memory loss is part of the picture, see our dementia home care page. Family caregivers who need a break can read about respite care. Under the VA, respite visits have limits on length and number.

What to know before you start

  • Transportation.Under VA rules, we cannot drive veterans in our vehicles when care is paid through VA benefits. Plan rides to appointments another way.
  • Trust and safety. Our caregivers go through background and reference checks and are bonded and insured. Read more on our caregiver standards page. If a match is not right, one phone call starts a switch to a different caregiver. Care managers can be reached 24 hours a day, every day of the year.
  • Other payment.Care outside what the VA authorizes is private pay, by major credit card or ACH bank transfer. Medi-Cal and Medicare, including Medicare Advantage, cannot be used to pay us. We bill after service, usually weekly. For long-term care insurance and all payment options, see paying for care and what care costs.
